Who says you shouldn’t go chasing waterfalls in the winter? If you ever find yourself in the area, there are tons of Niagara trails that lead to breathtaking views.
From small streams, to massive cliffs, all of these waterfalls are sure to have your jaw dropping.
While you may have seen some of these cascades on one of your summer adventures, you’re going to want to re-take your hike.
With the cold weather settling in, these frozen spots are even more beautiful in the winter! You’ll feel like you’ve stepped onto the set of Frozen.
Ball’s Falls
Located in Lincoln, Ontario, this stunning cascade is the perfect spot to take in some wintry views. Now an ancient ghost town this location is jammed-packed with history.
Not only can you take in the water, but you can also check out the Ball family home, an operating flour mill, a lime kiln, a church, a blacksmith shop, a carriage shed, and more.
Louth Falls
Louth Conservation Area is the perfect spot to check out if you need to get a waterfall fill. The winding trail along the escarpment leads you past two cascades that you can enjoy.
You might want to bring your binoculars because this location is also a great place for birdwatching. You can even spot the unique forest songbirds.
Short Hills
Make sure to grab your hiking shoes before visiting this waterfall. The trail is about 6.2 km long and will take approximately 3 hours to hike.
However, the views of this frozen cascade are worth it and you can even spot some white-tailed deer while on your journey.
Smokey Hollow
While this spot is located about 50 minutes outside of Niagara, in Waterdown, it is worth the drive. Standing at 10 meters tall, this cascade once used to be used to power a local sawmill.
Now, it is part of a 3.5 km hike. If you’re looking for something a little easier, you can also take a side trail to the falls that is only 1.1 km.
Beamer Falls
Located in Grimsby, this local falls is a beauty to see in the winter. Known as a ribbon cascade type falls, it flows 12 m down into the gorge below.
As you hike through Beamer Memorial Conservation Area you also can enjoy one of the most breath-taking and panoramic views of the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario.
Rockway Falls
Falling into a deep gorge, this a must-see spot when the colder months hit. The tall waterfall can often freeze over, showcasing stunning hanging icicles.
Located super close to Ball’s Falls, it’s the perfect place to go if you’re looking to hit more than one of Niagara trails in the day.
